pREVIEW: About The Book

Within the valley, known as Angus, there resided a young man by the name of Gustav. He, along with other young men and women of the valley sought to accept the gauntlet of challenge in becoming members of King Angus’s militia. Those who were called to the games would face many levels of military skills.

→Ariel knew of Gustav’s desire to enter the games and tried her best to test him because she was an excellent swordsman, having been taught by her father. During one of their many love matches, Ariel challenged him in a series of dangerous thrusts and Parry’s causing Her young opponent to fall into the farm’s pond. She didn’t want to be left out of this much fun, so she jumped in after him. Just then, they notice a member of the Kings militia, who had entered the farm yard. Enjoying the scene, the armored warrior laughed out loud and asked, I seek you, young Gustav, who has applied to join the Kings militia.

” The rider rode off and laughingly hollered: ” now that I have seen your baptism, you’re to report to the castle in three days time.” As the pair of soaked lovers watched the rider gallop away, they hugged each other, and shivering Ariel asked: ” wherever you are sent, please return to me.”

Chapter 1

The rolling hills and plains of the Valley were embraced by majestic granite and limestone peaks. There were several passages that led in and out of this jewel of a valley. Well-worn pathways were actually ancient roadways allow ing travelers and merchants entrance into the Valley. Anyone approaching these two narrow passes would be greeted by large stone gates with accompanying watchtowers above the road ways. These gateways each had modest living quarters for mem bers of the king’s militia, men who had enlisted for a certain time to be part of this home guard. There were the first lines of defense for the Valley. If a large force of unknown intentions was seen approaching the passes, an alarm would be sounded that could be heard from the fortress. Within hours, additional forces would be sent to the pass that sent the alarm.

Above each of these narrow passes was a protection of the last re sort. This was a rockfall that could be triggered to temporarily block the pass. Since both passes had large boulders throughout, the militia had been able to create the rockfall. There was a large boulder above each pass that had been undercut and blocked so that with little effort, one could cause the rockfall. The only catch to this protection was that whoever dislodged the rockfall better be a good runner.

There was also a cadre of seasoned veterans taking part as officers and administrative personnel. This was not an army of bel ligerence, but protectors of the borders and of the realm. They also provided a first defense against intruders, robbers, and bands of wanderers. The merchants who traveled into the Valley brought goods for sale and bought trade items that were crafted by many tradesmen who lived in this land. Surplus foodstuffs were also bought and sold. On certain days of the week, people of the realm were allowed to speak with the king and his advisors. There were small cooking fires preparing certain delicacies; the aromas were a pleasant addition to the festive air within the mar ket. The king’s guard patrols the grounds to ensure that all went well. It was a very busy place that reflected the better times within the valley of Angus.
As you entered the valley, you would see rich farmlands, some with fields of wheat, oats, and rye that appeared as gold and white rolling seas of sustenance. As one would look to one side of the valley, you would notice a large fortress.
